Gareth Balmer on Playing a Key Role in Our Customer's IT Infrastructure

"Meeting my customers face to face has helped me to build trusted relationships and better understand their priorities and needs".

How did you get into what you do?

When I left school, I worked as an Apprentice Groundsman with my Dad. As IT became more prevalent to the needs of the business, my interest began to grow. Initially, this was general first-line troubleshooting and escalating to third-party service providers.

I certainly miss the summer days out in the open – but not the rainy ones!!

What has been your favourite piece of work at GBE Converge?

I’m lucky because my work at GBE Converge is extremely varied, so it’s hard to choose one particular piece. However, I do take pride in my work with cabs for new installs or refreshes. I get a lot of satisfaction from knowing my work allows our clients to run their operations smoothly. It’s good to be part of a team and although I’m not one for the limelight, I feel valued for the work I do.

How has your career at GBE Converge developed?

Since starting, I’ve seen the company expand and grow immensely. I’m hardly in the office these days, travelling to various customer sites including London, Southampton and Manchester. This involves installing and remedying, from DSL connectivity issues to installing networks and other infrastructure. I really enjoy the variety.

Are there any key projects you are working on currently?

GBE Converge were awarded a multi-year IT support contract to provide continued infrastructure solutions for SOHO Coffee and their planned expansion programme. I currently have a key role in supporting the network installation.

I’m also working closely with The Lucky Onion Group who recently invested in state-of-the-art infrastructure systems across all of their sites. I’ll be working to change over their critical business systems, including their table and room booking systems.

What might someone be surprised to know about you?

I’m a keen fisherman and am qualified in pesticides application. I was also an extra in the BBC Drama “The Choir” in 1995.

What do you enjoy most about your role at GBE Converge?

Meeting my customers face to face has helped me to build trusted relationships and better understand their priorities and needs.

What attracted you to working at GBE Converge?

I was ready for a new challenge and wanted to expand my technical skillset. GBE Converge work with industry leading products and have a diverse portfolio of clients so I knew it would be a great opportunity.

What is your proudest achievement at GBE Converge?

As I said, I’m not one for the limelight. However, I do my work as efficiently as possible and try and go unnoticed – which is no mean feat for a bloke of my stature!
